A paint job is only as good as the prep work behind it. Here's what separates a lasting result from one that chips, peels, or fades within a year.

Prep Work Is Everything

Proper prep includes cleaning the surface, filling holes and cracks, sanding rough spots, and applying the right primer. Skipping prep is the number one reason paint jobs fail prematurely.

Choose the Right Sheen

  • Flat/matte: Great for ceilings and low-traffic areas. Hides imperfections well.
  • Eggshell: Ideal for living rooms and bedrooms. Easy to clean.
  • Satin: Perfect for kitchens, bathrooms, and hallways where wipe-downs are needed.
  • Semi-gloss/gloss: Best for trim, doors, and cabinets.
  • Use Quality Paint

Premium paints — Benjamin Moore, Sherwin-Williams, Behr Premium — cost more per gallon but cover better, last longer, and look far superior over time. Two coats of quality paint beats three coats of cheap paint every time.

    Temperature and Humidity Matter

In Maine, avoid painting in extreme cold or high humidity. Ideal painting conditions are between 50–85°F and below 70% humidity. Painting in cold or damp conditions leads to poor adhesion and slow drying.

    Let It Cure

Paint looks dry to the touch quickly, but full cure takes 2–4 weeks. Avoid scrubbing walls or hanging heavy items until the paint has fully cured.
