Homeowner cleaning and sealing a wooden deck in spring

Spring is the best time to give your deck a thorough once-over after the long Maine winter. Here's the process our crew follows when preparing a deck for the warmer months.

Step 1: Inspect the Structure

Start by walking the entire deck and checking for soft spots, warped boards, and any structural wobbling. Pay special attention to posts at ground level, where rot often begins unnoticed.

Step 2: Check the Hardware

Look for popped nails, loose screws, and corroded fasteners. Replace any hardware that's showing signs of rust or pulling free from the wood. Stainless steel or coated deck screws are your best long-term option.

Step 3: Deep Clean the Surface

A power wash makes a dramatic difference. Use the right pressure for your decking material — too much on softwood or composite can cause damage. Let the deck dry completely (usually 48–72 hours) before moving on.

Step 4: Inspect and Repair Railings

Railings must be solid — shake each section and post to check for movement. Tighten or replace any loose connections. A failing railing is a serious safety hazard.

Step 5: Apply Fresh Sealant or Stain

Once the deck is clean and dry, apply a quality waterproof sealant or semi-transparent stain. This protects the wood from UV damage and moisture penetration. Plan to reseal every 2–3 years.
